MIXED EMOTIONS.
went jamming today. haha..it was great fun. shouting and playing till we went crazy. ate macs then came home. so i would say that it was a good day but what spoiled my mood was an article i read about in the sunday times.
it was about the a*star guy, phillip yeo. the article spoke about his fiesty arguments with a student. at first i thought, "yeah, what this guy is saying has meaning". until he made that poke at the younger generation of today. our generation. my generation.
" a rude generation who hides behind blog anonimity spewing vitrolic words without real knowledge or depth of thinking. Sad for the future of the next generation"
" what are you doing for the next generation"
(cracks knuckles, takes a deep breath)
alright, before i give comments on the article and mr.yeo's comments.
1.) since i do not know much about this incident, my views will only be limited to the above-mentioned comments.
2.) i'm not going to hide behind "blog anonimity. my name is Bryan Toh Zihui. 16 this year. so if mr yeo ever sees this, he won't have the chance to use his point agaisnt me.
lets begin. judging from the points that mr yeo mentioned, he has a dislike to the younger generation these days. here's what i have to say. don't, and i stress don't, stereotype an ENTIRE generation just because of the comments of a few people. each and every young citizen has his or her own views. it does'nt mean that if some people choose to post negative comments which tarnish their generation's reputation that every other member of that generation also has the same, exact thoughts. so don't say that we are a rude generation. how would you like it if i say your generation is an in-considerate one if i see an old man spitting by the road side? it would be un-ethical would'nt it? so same for you. not everyone is as bad as you think of them to be. vitrolic words without knowledge or thinking? once again i refer to the point i just mentioned. it does'nt mean that if one person makes such as mistake that everyone would right?
anonimity. you speak of it as if it is some sort of cowardance. i beg to differ. a little discretion would'nt hurt. maybe to you, being all "guang ming zheng da" about your comments should be the way to go. but think for a minute. you, are a person in a postion of power. the chief of a renowned research facilty so of course if you were to make any comments that would deem offensive to any one in society it would'nt be much of a problem to you. but for the majority, who prefer to remain anonymous with our comments, that is'nt the case. an offensive comment to say someone to you, might land us in court. it is akin to a peasant spewing vulgarities at a governer. anonimity is more of a form of sercurity than cowardance. sometimes it helps to lie low. you would'nt say anything insulting to your superior would you? guess not. now the worse part of your comment. you say that the future of our generation is a sad one. think about what you just said. the hard reality for you is that the young generation of today will be the ones leading their country to further prosperity tommorrow. so logically, if OUR future is sad, so is yours as yours is a future where our generation will be the driving force. i'm not saying that the older generations are useless. but eventually, the young will replace the old. if this does'nt happen, then why the need for population growth plans?
don't say our future is sad. ours is a bright one, full of opportunity and possibilities. why, saying that our generation's future is sad is like cursing your country. because how the country progresses is most probably dependant on how the younger generation is moulded. and don't say we're not contributing to the next generation or that we're arrogant. if we did'nt want to contribute to the next generation, your research facility would be redundant beacuse after all, is'nt research about finding ways to improve things? and are'nt most of your researchers young? yeah, i think you get my drift.
i don't know if mr yeo will really visit my blog. but if he does, then i hope he would think twice next time before mentioning such scathing remarks about the younger generation especially in a newspaper that is read by them. young people read the paper too FYI. and if you really dislike this generation this much, why not make a perfect one? seeing that you're most probably a science genius. if not, learn to live with what comes and don't whine about the young generation's faults. no one except God is perfect after all. that include you too lah. with that, i rest my case.
